Critics

(Written in an olive garden, two days after the event)

I will always remember
that day-
I was just part
of the curious crowd
but I overheard some critical voices
(I suspect they were from the local cross makers union)
passing technical comments
and criticizing the quality of the wood
used in making the cross

not that it made
the slightest difference
to the outcome

A Burial of Tears

burial-of-tears-2

A light shower began to fall,
‘A soft day’
So it is called in my country.
It settled on the coffin
Forming on the polished surface,
Drops like transparent dew –
Tears of the rain,
Some hung like observers from nearby trees.
Christ, spread-eagled in bronze,
Miraculously was not affected by this;
In fact it made him looked bored;
As if this was his mundane, monotonous daily job.

Two men (dressed in black)
Faces masked with the sympathetic
Camouflage of their task,
Opened umbrellas over a group
That was also mainly, wearing dark colours.
With the exception of a white cassocked priest.
He sprinkled water –
Disturbing the perfect composition of nature.
Christ still did not move.

The grave which already had been dug,
Was covered with a flower bedecked board
This was moved aside;
The straps were slung –
The weight tested –
Lowered.

Some drops ran urgently
But too late, to escape the hole.
Then we buried our tears.

The Löst Dream

lost-dreams-2

The Löst Dream

Bordering on insanity,
With no chance of reprieve;
I watched my löst dream,
Crumbling under rumbling traffic
In the street.
Powdered into senseless death,
With no soul for rebirth,
Taken by the next wind
To be sown,
On someone else’s earth.
Eaten there by scavengers,
Who feed their young
On old dead dreams;
The excrement of carnivore crows,
In the end
Will
.. all that will be seen.
